What typically means ‘Sixty’ in Hindi is actually a sugary sweet in Mangalore. Made of Maida flour & rolled in powdered sugar with a hint of cardamom. When I was little, I always liked to chip off the base of each ‘saat’ which is thickened sugar before gobbling up the ‘blandish’ sweet – I simply loved it. The same practice is followed even today ๐
Maalpuri
Another one of my favourites which is the distant cousin of the ‘Maalpua’ famously made in Mumbai during Ramadan as one of the sweets prepared for the Iftaar (breaking of fast). Whenever I used to pass by mountains of Malpuas piled on top of each other by sweetmakers setting shop outside the railway stations (of local trains) I would instantly be reminded of the dear Maalpuri that I left behind in Mangalore. I don’t miss to grab a few during each trip. These deep fried babies don’t have a long shelf life so they are best refrigerated & microwaved before eating.

@ May: Now u r making me salivate!! Slurp! how cud i forget the Jalebi? I didnt ask for it either thinking that it may not last long (my MIL came by train this time)…we also get smaller orange versions of the jalebi here, so i wasnt missing it so much

Born & raised in mlore i hardly ate these sweets until i crossed the arabian sea, now wen im nt been(though nt available in dis country) able to see these around i soooooooooo miss these delicious sweets, and also the yellow color square sweet , i forgot the name! I think kadhi! The moment anybody comes here frm mlore my parents send me these and within 48hrs its all over:(….

Do you know how to make Aatras (I hope I have spelled it correctly, you get it in bakeries in Managalore along malpuri. It is made up of jaggery, rice and dal and then deep fried in cocounut oil. If you could post the receipe it will be great. My grand mom and my aunt use to make it.

Hi Florine, sorry, I have not heart of Aatras/unable to recall what it is. What is it shaped like? Do u mean Neiappams? They are round and made of rice & jaggery & deepfried

They are round. In konkani it is know as aatras, I don't know its kannada name. It has ingredients like pepper, rice, jaggery

Oh..I visited mangalore this week and came back with all these wonderful goodies..yummm.. and Taj Mahal is bustling as always and has improvised and added variations on all their original sweets..worth a visit..my fella mangies. .:)
