The classic Ham Sandwich
Craving a satisfying and tasty meal? Look no further than a classic ham sandwich! Whether it’s for a quick breakfast, light lunch or a picnic, this easy-to-make sandwich is a timeless favourite. I can’t remember the first time I ate it but I know that I fell in love with it instantly. Sometime ago the husband tried to recreate it at home and it has been our favourite ever since. I had shared the video of this recipe a while ago but realised that the written recipe had not yet been posted, so read on for a simple yet delicious ham sandwich recipe that will please your taste buds.
Choosing the Right Ingredients
Ham sandwiches are versatile and customizable. Start with selecting the perfect bread and high-quality ham slices. For best results use white sandwich bread, the slices of which are slightly bigger than regular bread. Now, the taste of this sandwich obviously depends on the brand and quality of ham used. It is pretty tough to find good ham in India but Bangalore has been kind. Most good pork & shops stock imported stuff and I chanced upon a good brand. The ham smelled fresh and delicious and not synthetic as if loaded with preservatives. The ham also had large slices that matched the size of the sandwich bread used.
Ham Alternatives
Well, you can’t really make a ham sandwich without the ham can you? But ofcourse, not everyone eats ham and not everyone who eats it can find a good one, so yes, while it is sacrilege, you can make a mean ham sandwich using chicken or turkey ham (which is a thing in the Middle Eastern countries). You can also use salami or proscuitto or any other cold cuts of your choice which would then make this a cold cut sandwich.

Toasting and Grilling
I love simple sandwiches as they are quick – all you need is to just slap all the ingredients together and you are done. However, if I am making them on the weekend when I have some extra time on hand, then toasting/grilling is definitely an option as the family loves it

Ham Sandwich
Ingredients
- 8 slices of sandwich bread
- 4 tablespoons mayonnaise
- 8 lettuce leaves cleaned
- 2 large cucumbers
- 4 large slices of ham
- 4 cheese singles/slices
Instructions
- Thinly slice the cucumbers diagonally and keep aside. Wash and pat the lettuce leaves dry. There should be no traces of water
- Apply half a tablespoon of mayonnaise on each slice of bread, then place two lettuce leaves followed by the cucumber slices
- Place the slice of ham and a slice of the cheese on top of it and cover with the remaining slice of bread
- Trim off the browned edges of the bread if desired. Slice the sandwich diagonally into half and serve
